Getting Pregnant When Overweight

Overweight And Pregnant: How To Manage?

2 mins to read Apr 1, 2021

If you are an overweight woman trying to get pregnant and have a baby, it’s definitely not the right time and you should postpone your plans till your weight is reduced. Proper weight matches the proper average of your body mass and avoids complications that may negatively affect your health and your fetus’ safety and health.

However, if you are overweight and pregnant, and looking for info to help you have a successful and healthy pregnancy journey, then you should be reading this. Here is some efficient advice to go through the three pregnancy phases smoothly and safely:

  • Make sure to eat healthy food, namely:
  • Vegetables, fruits and whole grain cereals and bread, to provide you with the necessary vitamins, minerals and fibers.
  • Low fat dairy products (or alternatively soy milk, rice milk or oat milk) to provide you with calcium, protein and iodine.
  • Red lean meat to provide you with iron and protein.
  • Oily fish such as sardine to provide you with protein and Omega 3 acids.

Consuming only healthy food will certainly give you a sense of being full and curb your appetite for unhealthy food.

  • Make sure to eat smaller meals at short intervals to help you control your weight and some annoying pregnancy symptoms, such as heartburn and morning sickness, by increasing your metabolism and reducing your fat and sugar cravings.
  • Increase your consumption of water to satisfy your daily need of liquids (6 to 8 cups of water per day). Avoid juices, soft drinks and flavored milk shakes for these contain lots of calories.
  • Avoid falling in the trap of craving for food rich in salt, sugar and “empty calories”, by abstaining from purchasing them and putting them at your disposal with the excuse of cravings during pregnancy.
  • Plan your basic meals and snacks ahead of time. This acts as an incentive to make healthy choices and always buy healthy food.
  • Seek for entertaining ways to pamper yourself from time to time away from food, such as a special massage session or going to the movies or spending time with friends.
  • Make sure to exercise moderately, for 30 minutes a day, most days of the week. If you’re new to the world of sports, we advise you to gradually incorporate exercise into in your daily schedule, unless your doctor has a different opinion.
  • Try as much as you can to add to your daily exercise routine physical activities that increase your daily movement with the least possible effort, such as walking to nearby stores and moving around while being with friends.

If it’s hard for you to follow these instructions and you’re trying to find yourself excuses to drop them, we advise you to consult your doctor and specialists. They would be able to consult on the necessary steps to follow to gain the least possible weight and keep risks away from both you and your baby.
