Can I Drink Soda While Pregnant?

Consuming Soft Drinks While Pregnant - Is It Safe?

2 mins to read Apr 1, 2021

Like every other expectant mother, you must work very hard to protect your developing embryo/fetus. You must also be careful about what you eat; many foods contain pathogenic germs and toxins that can put your bundle of joy’s safety and health at risk.

What about soft drinks? Are they considered safe for unborn babies? Are you allowed to indulge in drinking soda while pregnant? If you aren’t quite sure yet, maybe it’s time you read this post...

If you’re trying to reduce your caffeine intake to 200 mg a day, as recommended by experts during pregnancy, remember that most soft drinks are high in caffeine.

Caffeine, known to cross the placenta and reach the fetus, is the first reason why you should quit soda. But it’s not the only one, because even if you choose to drink caffeine-free alternatives, they won’t be a good idea for you either; they contain high amounts of sugar and empty calories, which may negatively affect your weight, your blood sugar levels and your baby nutritional requirements.

Not to mention that artificial sweeteners used as an alternative to sugar in many types of soft drinks, are not suitable for any pregnant woman, just like preservatives and artificial flavors.

Moreover, many research studies have shown that carbonated water in sodas can cause low calcium levels in blood and bones.

But your growing baby needs every single bit of calcium and essential nutrients to thrive and be healthy. And the best thing you can do for him is to stop drinking soda and indulge in healthy beverages like water, milk and fresh juices, instead!
